1 Timothy 2: 8-15

I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works. Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.

Paper Outline

My Paper Outline goes something like this:

1. Introduction (.5 page)
2. Preferred Greek Text with Textual Criticism Apparatus Explanation which there aren't really any of (.5 page)
3. My translation (.5 page)
4. Word studies which I did the one from the assignment and two more (2 pages)
5. Historical Context (Greco-Roman and some other choice pieces from primary and secondary sources) (at least 1 page)
6. Intertextuality of Paul's writings and other Biblical passages (.5 to 1 page)
7. My Commentary using above evidence and secondary source ideas (2-2.5 pages)
8. Conclusion, where I answer my thesis from the introduction (.5 page)

Which is somewhere around 8 pages without the greek passage or my translation. I'm more worried that it's too long. but I hope this helps.

By the way check out this find.

big paper help/reassurance

Hey gang,

Having a mild panic attack and would love some thoughts. Based on what Dr. Grams said in class and our 2K work limit for this paper, it seems like we literally supposed to take assignments 2-5 and plug them into this paper and then read some secondary sources to get a broader view of the scholarship out there on this passage.

Is that what y'all are thinking? It seems like in order to follow the proper path for an exegesis paper, we have several more word studies and behind and in the text issues to unpack, plus the new secondary source material to be reading. I know how long it took me to do the first set of assignments and doing them again and then trying to fit them into 2K words has me worried both on amount of time and space to fit it in.

Any help/comfort/clarity y'all can offer, would be much appreciated.

Additional Resources

Hey All:

Here are some things that I've found helpful.

N.T. Wright has a great article on women in ministry (including a section on our passage) in the Autumn 2006 issue of Priscilla Papers, available in the library.

Linda Belleville's chapter in Discovering Biblical Equality: Complementarity Without Heirarchy (edited by Ronald W. Pierce and Rebecca Groothuis) was helpful.

Also, John Jefferson Davis and others have written some information about creation hierarchy, also in Priscilla Papers.

Thanks for sharing your resources as well!

Evangelical Feminism by Grudem

hey, some of you have asked me about or borrowed that book, Evangelical Feminism by Wayne Grudem. The full book is actually online, you can find it here: http://www.cbmw.org/Evangelical-Feminism-and-Biblical-Truth/. It's in pdf format, separated out by chapter.

Resource suggestions?

Has anyone come across some good resources? At this point I would recommend a few:

* Sharon Hodgin Gritz: "Paul, Women Teachers, and the Mother Goddess at Ephesus"
* N.T. Wright "Paul for Everyone: 1 Timothy"
* John Stott: "The Message of 1 Timothy"

interesting blog article

Hey gang!

I had a nice chat with some Jehovah's Witnesses at my house this morning. One of the things that came up was the eternal submission of Jesus to the Father (since they believe God created Jesus and Jesus created the holy spirit). So, I sent an email to a friend to chat through this and he gave me the following link:

http://benwitherington.blogspot.com/2006/03/eternal-subordination-of-christ-and-of.html

Evidently, John Grudem and a growing number of evangelicals, believe that Jesus is eternally subordinate to Father, because that is His role. And they use this view to support their belief in complementarianism and the subordination of women. I haven't heard this before, but it is taking the view we all have roles to its logical conclusion.

It may be helpful for our final paper, but even if not, it certainly is something to process through, especially since we talked about Grudem's book in our discussion time during class.

Peace of Christ,
Alex

Welcome

Welcome to the 1 Timothy Group. This site is designed to facilitate discussion regarding interpretation of 1 Timothy 2:8-15 for the NT 502 course. Think of it as an online version of our louder discussions that happen hours before the paper is due in the library! Post resources, questions, answers, comments, and anything that you think may help others survive.
